How Computer Keyboards Work

We use keyboards to write messages search the web and play games. We press keys and letters appear on our screen. How does a keyboard know which key you pressed? Under the keys lies a smart electrical circuit. Let us see how it works. ⌨️

The Keyboard Grid Circuit

Inside a keyboard there is a flexible plastic sheet with printed circuit lines. These lines form a grid under the keys. When you press a key it pushes two copper layers together. This closes the electrical circuit at that spot. The keyboard controller detects this electrical connection instantly.

Here is the key press process:

[User Presses Key] ==> [Circuit Path Closes] ==> [Key Code Sent to Computer]

The controller sends a unique number to your computer. The computer translates this number into a letter like A or B and displays it on the screen.

Keyboard Types compared

Let us compare the two main keyboard designs:

Keyboard Type How It Feels Best Feature
Membrane Keyboard Soft and quiet typing feeling Cheap to make and water resistant
Mechanical Keyboard Clicky and tactile physical feedback Extremely durable and great for gaming

⌨️ Typing speed is measured in words per minute. Here is the typing speed formula:

Typing Speed = Total Words Typed / Time in Minutes

Practice regularly to increase your typing speed index. 📊

Caring for Your Keyboard

Keep your keyboard clean. Dust and crumbs can block the keys from closing the circuit. Use a small brush to clean the gaps between keys. A clean keyboard works perfectly and lasts for years!
