In many Pokémon games, traded Pokémon above a certain level may disobey until the trainer earns enough badges or reaches required story progress. This system prevents players from receiving an extremely high-level Pokémon early and winning without normal progression. Pokémon caught by your own trainer usually obey normally, while transferred or traded Pokémon may follow the obedience rules. If a Pokémon ignores commands, falls asleep, uses another move, or hurts itself, check the current badge requirement and its level. The exact thresholds differ by generation, so use the in-game badge information for your title.
