Momentum means having the initiative so that the opponent must react to your actions rather than freely execute their own plan. You gain momentum by forcing switches, using safe pivot moves, applying pressure with threats, setting hazards, or predicting correctly. You lose momentum when an opponent gets a free setup turn, forces your switch, or repeatedly brings in favorable matchups. Momentum is not a visible stat, but it helps explain why a team can be losing position even when both sides have the same number of Pokémon. Build teams with ways to regain momentum, such as pivots, priority, speed control, and solid defensive answers.
