Setup means using moves or effects to strengthen a Pokémon before attacking. Common setup moves raise Attack, Special Attack, Speed, defenses, or several stats at once. The goal is to create a position where the boosted Pokémon can defeat multiple opponents or force switches. Setup is risky because it gives the opponent a turn to attack, inflict status, use Haze, force a switch, or bring in a counter. Good setup opportunities come from strong defensive matchups, forced switches, screens, or support from teammates. A setup move should fit the Pokémon’s stats, Ability, coverage, and team plan.
