A resistance reduces damage from a particular type of move. A single resistance commonly halves damage, while two relevant types can reduce it further. Resistances are important because they let a Pokémon switch into certain attacks more safely and create opportunities to heal, set up, or pressure the opponent. However, resistance alone does not guarantee safety: a powerful STAB move, item boost, critical hit, or offensive boost can still deal significant damage. Defensive planning should consider HP, defenses, recovery, Speed, and possible coverage moves in addition to type chart matchups.
